Export Products

Mindanao plays a vital role in the export industry of the Philippines. It is actually the major source of top-quality export products, making the country profit millions of dollars. Industrial products, canned tuna, pineapple and fresh fruits, are some of the dollar-earning products of Mindanao.

The Mindanao Sea, the Sulu Sea, and the Moro Gulf comprise the fishing grounds of Gen. San., known location of tuna abundance. Aside from this, state-of-the-art fish port makes it the ideal centre for tuna business. Moreover, Gen. San. has been the source of export-quality tunas — canned and sashimi grade. There are a number of canneries located in Gen. San. and neighbouring cities to meet the increasing demand of canned tunas. Gen. San. did not only help the rise of the export industry in the country, but also provide job opportunities to Filipinos.

Multinational companies like Del Monte and Dole both have pineapple plantations in Mindanao, Bukidnon and Polomolok, South Cotabato to be specific. Canned pineapple, like chunks and juices, are topping the list of export products from Northern and Southern Mindanao. The next major fruit exportation is banana. In fact, large banana plantations are found in Mindanao. “Mindanao accounts for more than 95% of the country’s banana export requirements.”

Various programs are conducted to improve the banana production in the region to meet the increasing demand. Fresh bananas are exported to countries like Japan, Korea, China, and New Zealand.

Following banana and pineapple as major fruit exports is mango. Manila Super Mango, locally known as “carabao”, which is recognized as the world’s best, is grown in Mindanao. The biggest producer of export mango in the region is Southern Mindanao and Western Mindanao.

Dubbed as the Industrial City of the South, Iligan City has helped boost the economy of Mindanao. The lists of industrial plants include cement plants, steel mills, flour mills, and chemical companies. One of the city’s contributions to export products is cold rolled steel from Global Steelworks Philippines, Inc. Coconut products such as oil, crude, and extraction pellets and cement are also export products of Iligan.
