In this video, I discuss five essentials of good herd work and show examples of:
-
Driving forward for the cut
-
Pausing and then moving across the pen with the flow of cattle
-
Using the cow-side leg during the cut
-
Keeping your horse on his haunches as you make the cut
-
Transitioning down to a deeper seat after the cut and when you start working the cow
-
Lowering your heart rate and planning between cattle and before re-entering the herd

LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
Thanks for sharing. I read many of your blog posts, cool, your blog is very good.
I have primarily been an English rider my whole life, primarily because I didn’t have access to cattle. Your videos and explanations are understandable, and concise, even for those that don’t come from this discipline. Learning so much and can’t wait until I have an opportunity to implement. Love these videos, plz keep them coming. 🙂 dc
Excellent video. Thank you for concise and clear explanations.
Awesome video !!!!
Will watch over and over
Thank you so much for your breakdown of the run
Once again very helpful and explained very well making it easy to follow.
Thank you for all your wisdom on so many topics .
Great info, thanks!
Excellent! Great to see and have your verbal step by step cues.It really helps to visualize while hearing it.
Great information! Loved it! Thank you Barb!
Love these chunks to break it down. Everything goes quickly in the pen, so this is so beneficial. Thanks
Love the reminder to take a minute to get your mind right before continuing on! Thank you so much for the video and commentary, Barb! Would really enjoy more videos like these! 🙂
Awesome video. This helps alot. Thanks Barb!
Barb! This is an amazing explanation of driving up!!!! Muchas gracias:)
Thanks. Really clear and informative. Keep them coming! So much to learn so I can best help my cool horse and stay out of his way.
Hi Barb thanks for an excellent critique of his cut and great advice as usual
Hi Barb, I just loved this video. When you go slow and point out what is done correctly it really helps me visualize what I should be doing. Thank you, you are so inspiring as always.
Hi Barb, I just love hearing you critique a cutting run. It seems so very complicated, and actually, I know it is. I don’t do cutting at all, but love to watch it. I plan to forward this video to a trainer who is competing in NRCHA events now. I”m sure he will find this very helpful. Thank you!
Love the chunks and breathing. I like your commentary. It helps so much. Still not sure what track I want to go. Getting the cutting bug really bad.
Excellent Barb, so good to walk through the process and be reminded of the steps. thanks 🙂
Love how you broke this down with slo-mo video, Barb. It made good written sense as well as visual sense. I “don’ know nothin’ about no cows” (yet!) but you have given me things to look for and to imagine doing with my QH Cooper who seems like he has the drive and skill if I’d just get on board. My interest is in team-penning, for fun, and this will be useful in getting the cow, helping move and pen the cow. At 71, I’m not ever gonna get any younger! Looking forward to Moab in Apri!.
Chunks! LOVE IT! Thanks for the consistent wise teaching
Very informative……love how you broke it down step by step. And lowering your heart rate is an awesome tip. Thank you!
Wow, I really liked how you broke this ride down. Very helpful.
These were great tips, thanks so much!
Excellent description!!
Loved this! Thanks, Barb!
Excellent tutorial! Really clear examples.
More, please!
Thank you for this video! As a beginner, it’s really nice to see the points you’re making and why each step is important. Maybe having examples of a not-so-great cut, an average cut, and then one like this and explaining the differences between them would also be nice.
I agree! I’m a beginner, too. What kinds of things are judges looking for that make it a “good” cut versus a “bad” cut?
I need more of this in my cutting life.
Excellent demonstration of how to make a credit earning cut. As always, very good for those of us practicing in our minds.
