I just returned from the NCHA Futurity.
When I saw these two cuts. I thought they would be great examples of how you can make the best decisions possible on the cut if cattle threaten to stay together and ‘get tangled up.’
Watch for three things:
1. How the cutters both steer and move their horse amid the threatening situations
2. How the cutter moves (or not) with the cow to be cut
3. How the cutter is aware of the cattle or cow that need to be cleared.
This was so helpful. Your narrative was great! I have been in these situations, it’s so hard to remain calm and breath and know what to do. Thank you!!
I really enjoyed the narrative and the lesson! The slow motion and your pointer helped a lot! Thanks Barb! Have a blessed Christmas!
Thank you ! This was so helpful, I’ve learned so much from you this last yr , how to stay calm and focus 😊
These videos are so helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to review these videos. This was great. I’ve had this issue so many times. I look forward to your next one.
I LOVED watching these cuts with your commentary. Clean cuts are the number one thing I need to work on. Thank you!
Awesome examples, Barb. And very helpful descriptions with video on “slo mo”. I now have a better understanding about timing the positioning on a cow for the best cut. It all happens so fast! My head spins. I enjoyed this lesson. Please – more like this one!!!
Thank you for this and all your awesome advice. I am planning to enter my first cutting in two weeks on my boxing horse. This advice might come in handy.
Super helpful and clear explanation of what is happening and how to handle the situation. Thanks!!
It was really wonderful to have you talking through these runs, and point out it each part. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Hi Barb
This was awesome. The slow motion really helped me see what you were explaining.
Thank you so much.
But I was a little distracted by your adorable couch cow ta tos 🙂
thanks so helpful…this has happened to me plenty of times so I appreciate the detailed explanation about how to think about making it work out when possible
Good videos with great narrative. Slo-mo was very educational. Thanks for the information. Very helpful.
Thank once again for the valuable information. I will study this clip many times and many times more. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and expertise in cutting. I have always found it extremely meaningful and helpful to me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family
Thank you for the great video. It is almost like playing chess.
Fabulous. So great to understand the “marry up” and “hung up” principles. Excellent description of the cow side leg, turn and face vs parallel on the cow, while watching your position with the cow. Really insightful. Thank you. 😊
very helpful for a novice! thank you!
Thank you for this interesting video on two challenging situations for very expert “cutters” at the NCHA Futurity! With your narration, the moves the riders made makes perfect sense. Being aware of a horse’s drive line seems to also make sense for positioning on moving cattle also. Thank you again, Very pretty to watch, especially with your narration as to what was going on!! 🙂
So, I grew up on a cattle ranch and my dad never told us which cow he was parting. He would just tell us to watch the cattle and “you will see soon enough which one I want out”. Soon it got to be a game among us youngsters holding rodear to see who could tell first which cow, or pair, he was parting. Doing that we learned to watch the whole herd, not just a particular cow, to identify the cut. To this day, I do that when I’m watching a cutting or herd work or turning back obviously.… Read more »
Thank you, liked that you slowed down the video so you could really see what was happening with the rider and cows
Thank you, good info!
Cool That last guy is the guy who won it, I think. He was awesome.
Thank you!!!
Please let me know if y’all can see it. Thank you!
Hi everyone, sorry for the glitch. Try now. It should be fixed.
Agree with Deb – on the technical issue – no video – and with Jeannie on seeing this happen on several runs and the different responses. I am also anxious to hear your take on it.
Hi Elaine, try the video now. It should be fixed.

Same problem! No video. I watched the futurity and saw a few tangled up… was thinking what a mess. I saw it handled a few different ways. I can’t wait to hear your solution!
